H5 Apps, directly in Excel!

Today we tested a small proof of concept that turned out to be pretty exciting.

H5 apps and Excel add-ins are both just web apps at the end of the day, so we thought, why not run our H5 apps directly inside Excel?

And that’s exactly what we did.

We built a simple H5 app that executes an M3 API and writes the result directly into a sheet. To run the app, we configured Excel to open M3 as an add-in.

Once M3 was up, we could browse and launch our H5 app just like normal—but now, from inside Excel.

Since the app is running inside Excel, it can read from and write to the sheet. That means you can interact with M3 and the spreadsheet at the same time—without switching tools.

And communication works both ways. The H5 app can also read data from Excel, so it’s totally possible to push updates to M3 based on the spreadsheet contents.

Checkout this 30 second video that shows the proof of concept in action!

We think this opens up some really interesting use cases—and we’d love suggestions for what to demo next!
